In 2002, Oscar de la Renta announced that his autumn/winter 2002-03 couture collection for Balmain would be his last. The veteran fashion designer, whose 10-year contract with the French design house had come to an end the same day, returned to New York to concentrate on his eponymous ready-to-wear line and signature fragrance business. “He has a very large business in the United States that will continue,” said his company spokeswoman Chantal Vizioz, who declined to explain why the contract had not been renewed
