In 2004, Stefano Gabbana insisted that there were very few modern stars with true style, and that contemporary actresses failed to match up to the icons of Hollywood’s golden age. “What style has Gwyneth Paltrow, for example? She doesn’t bring any personality or individuality to what she wears,” he said. “If I mention Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo or Ava Gardner, you immediately have an idea, an image in your head. If, however, I say Catherine Zeta-Jones, what do you see? A face, a look, but not an image or a defined style.”
